Why does my baby have diarrhea/constipation for so long?

baby diarrhea
blueberry muffins asked:

During winter time when my baby turned 7 months she caught a cold/virus & got really sick. When she got sick she had diarrhea all the time. She was sick for 2 months but her diarrhea lasted until she was almost almost 12 months old. It lasted about 4 months!

finally her stools were normal again for 2 weeks.

Than she got off formula & switch to whole milk. She would get constipated a lot because of the whole milk. She was constipated for 5 months! not straught tho. On & off.

When she had a runny nose for 2 days she had diarrhea again. she continued to have it for 5 days. had diarrhea 3-5 times a day. during this time ive been givin her liquid vitamins.

Just this afternoon she was constipated again! i thought her constipation was finally over but it came back.

She has always been drinkin the same amount of milk because she is such a picky eater n wont eat!! I know she needs fiber to help **** but she barely takes the food i give her. I dont know wats wrong.
Ive taking her to the dr and he prescribed her the miralax powder. But i dont use it all the time due to the fact that she will need it all the time. Has this happened to anyone? Your baby having diarrhea for 4 months. then constipation. It frustrating!

  2. I had a son who was constipated all the time till he was about 2 1/2 I never knew what it was from but he just out grew it. I did mix citrucel with his bottles and that helped. My second son had diarreah all the time but it was from a milk protien allergy

  3. See your doctor! I’m pretty sure, a infant at that age, thier stool are soft and mushy, and stinky!! And I don’t think you should be giving liquid vitamins to an infant. 4 months of diarrhea sounds unrealistic in the fact she would have been dyhdrated and probably should have went to the hospital. Try changing your milk to soy milk and never force a child to eat, if she is not eating well, and it’s effecting her health, then go to the doctors.

  4. Your baby’s illness last winter sounds like it may have been RSV, especially since you said she was really sick for 2 months and had continued diarrhea. Regular colds do not last that long.
Diarrhea is a common symptom when babies get sick. The main thing is be sure the pediatrician is aware so she doesn’t get dehydrated.
As far as the constipation, a diet of mainly whole milk and vitamins can cause this. Somehow, you have to make sure that she starts eating her baby food fruits and veggies. I know it’s a battle sometimes (been through it 3 times), but a diet of mainly whole milk isn’t healthy. It isn’t complete nutrition like ****** milk or formula and she not only gets constipated, but she can become anemic. She’ll probably fight you and spit it out because the taste, texture and even the way she swallows is all unfamiliar to her. But, she will eventually get the hang of it. Consistency is the key.
If you need to, talk to her doctor about tricks to help her eat. And good luck to you, mommy!

  5. I’ve heard that a diarrhea/constipation alteration is a common sign of food allergies. Could be to milk. Watch out though, lots of people have soy allergies too…remember rice milk and almond milk as options.

Did she take antibiotics when she was sick? This can mess up the “good bugs” in her intestines and make it so she can’t digest her food properly. Intestines are slow to heal. Make sure they’re not irritated with too much fiber (apple juice is irritating too) .

Yogurt and sauerkraut (organic if you can find it, so that the preservatives haven’t prevented the growth of the beneficial organisms) help put back the “good bugs”.

    Good luck.

  6. My baby had what seemed like diarrhea for months while he was in day care and on only formula. After he stopped going to daycare and eating solids his stools became firm and “normal” then just recently he got really bad diarrhea which lasted about 5-7 days in between the diarhea he had two hard stools, I assume as a result of loss of water because the diarhea returned one day later (5th day after initial diarhea diaper). Two days later it returned to firmer stool (firmer than what was normal for him. Then it softened a bit and seemed pretty normal. Now today he had one splat in his diaper that looked like diarhea, but it didn’t smell and was such a small amount. I don’t know what to think. It is not running out all the time like the diarhea was 2wks ago though, so I am confused. I wonder if something is wrong or if everything is okay. Anybody have any insight? I think for your baby if you try a balanced diet and give plenty of water and 4-8 oz of juice a day the bowels should return to normal. If not maybe a doctor can run some tests. I will have my doc do the same if my baby’s stools don’t return to normal and stay normal w/in the next two days. Good luck and good bless you and your baby. Insight/ help please!!!!
