Jessica asked:
My 17 month old daughter has had diarrhea since last night. Today she has went through about 9 diapers in about 7 hours. Along with the diarrhea she has a diaper rash, from the diarrhea. I called the clinic and the nurse said to just watch for sings of dehydration. I am worried about her. If she keeps on having the diarrhea through tonight do you think I should take her to the emergency department, just to be evaluated?
She has no fever and no other signs of an illness.

Going to the ER wouldn’t be a bad idea if it persists. Babies can get dehydrated in no time and die from it. Keep a close eye on her. Hope she gets better.

better safe than sorry, 9 diapers in 7 hours is an awful lot, and their immune systems aren’t the best.
I definitely suggest going to the emergency department.

I understand that you are worried. That’s one part of being a good mom. I am the mother of 3 grown children and an 8 yr old. Go ahead and watch her close and yes push the liquids. If she is worse or no better by morning I would call the doctor. It may just be a 24-36 hour bug.

just keep something on her so her rash doesn’t get worse, if you don’t have diaper rash cream using bag balm, or vaseline will work. Keep pushing drinks on her, pop sickles are always a huge help, even if there isn’t a fever. If tomorrow she still has diarrhea then you should go ahead and take her in. You could call the hospital and ask them for advice as well, even though they may just tell you the same thing as the clinic, but it wouldn’t hurt.

I would save your co-pay right now. As long as she is still ****** and does not have dry looking lips, still has tears when she cries, she is not dehydrated yet.
Feed her some banana and some applesauce. Maybe go get some gatorade G2 for her to drink. Most people would say get her pedialyte, but that stuff is NASTY tasting and my kids never wanted to drink it. G2 is lower in sugar and milder tasting than regular gatorade and my kids **** it down when they are sick. If she is still having diarrhea on Thursday morning then call the doctor back and try to get her in.
